Brazilian mission in Japan debates changes in the IP system In an international mission in Japan, INPI President Luiz Otávio Pimentel participated in the High Level Forum on the Use of the Intellectual Property System for Economic, Social and Cultural Development. With the participation of representatives from 60 countries, the meeting was promoted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in cooperation with the Japanese Patent Institute (JPO), on 22 and 23 February in Tokyo .

Officials at the event included WIPO Director General Francis Gurry; the Deputy Minister of Economy, Industry and Commerce of Japan, Masaki Ogushi; and the president of the JPO, Naoko Munakata. Pimentel participated in the panel “Changes in the intellectual property system (IP) in response to the trends of the times”, along with speakers from the Philippines, South Africa and Sri Lanka. The moderator of the debate was Ken-ichiro Natsume, director of the PCT International Cooperation Division at WIPO.

In his speech, the INPI president emphasized the importance of automating formal procedures, a sustainable solution to backlog problems, the digitization of all official documents, especially those that make up the examination processes and the IP registries, as well as elimination of bureaucracy so that national IP institutes can meet society’s demand with efficiency and reasonable time to provide services.

Other topics discussed at the event were: new challenges and initiatives in IP to promote innovation; actions to stimulate the use of technological information; development of human resources; and the future of international cooperation on IP. As part of the agenda, the INPI president also had bilateral meetings with representatives of IP institutes from the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam to discuss cooperation in this area. Prior to the event, on February 21, Renata Ribas, a member of the International Relations Coordination and part of the INPI mission in Japan, visited JPO headquarters.
